He is at work on Going Nowhere Fast, a study of narratives of progress in nineteenth-century France. Stirling Haig is professor of French at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has served as president of the AATF and editor of the The French Review and North Carolina Studies in the Romance Languages and Literatures. He is the author of Flaubert and the Gift of Speech (1986), The Madame Bovary Blues (1987), Stendhal: The Red and the Black (1989) and of articles on several periods of French literature. He is editing a volume of essays on literature and the arts in nineteenth-century Europe.
